Frequently Asked Questions
Why bone broth?
Bone broth is a nutritional powerhouse with a wide range of benefits for conditions related to:
- Digestion & gut health
- Hair & Nails
- Joints & Inflammation
Bone broth is a veritable food-based multivitamin that's loaded with good things your body craves. Here are just a few - The glycosaminoglycans glucosamine, hyaluronic acid, and chondroitin sulfate. Bone bone is also rich in naturally occurring electrolytes, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, silicon, collagen, gelatin, and the amino acids proline and glycine.
All of the nutrients are locked in the bones, tendons, and cartilage of animals until the slow-cooking process liberates them. By simmering the bones, joints, and feet of healthy, pasture-raised animals in water for 20+ hours, you are creating an extract of collagen, bone, skin, marrow, and fat - the very essence of our being - that the body can use immediately and efficiently when sipped as a warm beverage or used in cooking.
How do you make your bone broth?
We slowly simmer 100% grass-fed, pasture-raised bones and connective tissue for 20+ hours to extract collagen, gelatin, amino acids and minerals. We add in fresh organic vegetables, herbs and spices for added flavor and nutrition. Our recipe and process creates the best-in-class collagen and gelatin-rich bone broth our customers have grown to love.
What are the health benefits of bone broth?
Studies have shown that 60-70 million adults are affected by some kind of gastrointestinal disease each year. Gut issues are a substantial root cause of illness and death in the United States. Many doctors are beginning to recommend bone broth as a supplement to help fix a host of digestive problems rampant in our modern society, including:
- Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
- Excessive Gas
- Constipation
- Diarrhea
- Leaky Gut Syndrome (Increased Intestinal Permeability)
Researchers have discovered that gelatin improves blood circulation to hair follicles, prolonging their lives and delaying or even preventing hair loss.
Just 7 grams of gelatin a day can increase your nail strength by as much as five times!
Integrative health specialists have linked leaky gut syndrome to a number of diseases, including asthma, acne, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, kidney disease, psoriasis, eczema, depression, chronic fatigue, and even heart failure.
A growing number of doctors and nutritionists recommend bone broth to help repair the intestinal walls and also restore a healthy balance to gut microbiomes. that have been overgrown with detrimental bacteria. Bone broth feeds the good bacteria in your gut. With the increasing medical evidence showing a strong link between gut health and digestive health, immunity, and mental health, who doesn’t want a healthy gut?
Can't I buy bone broth from the grocery store?
The short answer, yes. The long answer: It’s complicated. Read on...
Bare Bones bone broth is made with real bones. The majority of “bone broth” products found in grocery stores today are not made from bones, and therefore DO NOT contain any of the healing and nourishing benefits of bone broth made from bones.
Unfortunately, there is nothing regulating the labeling of products as bone broth. If “bones” are not listed on the package, it is not bone broth, and therefore it simply DOES NOT contain any of the benefits of bone broth - as the benefits are locked in the bones.
If you’re truly seeking a bone broth that will be effective in helping address your health issues, or if you simply want to add bone broth to your healthy lifestyle, we suggest only buying bone broth products that are made using bones. You will see “bones” listed on the ingredient panel. Not “stock” or “broth”, but it will literally read something like this:
Chicken broth (made from filtered water and from pasture-raised chicken bones)
Beef broth (made from filtered water and from grass-fed beef bones)
Or, you may see “beef broth*” or “chicken broth*” as an ingredient, and then see “*broth made from filtered water and from grass-fed beef bones” following the ingredient list.
This is how the USDA requires bone broth products made with bones to be labeled. “Bones” must be listed, so if you don’t see it, it’s not made using bones. It’s that simple.
How does your bone broth have a shelf life of one year?
We use a process called retort, where the broth is cold-filled into the pouch and sealed. Next, the pouch is heated with steam until it’s effectively “canned”. This process is identical to home canning in glass jars, but we use flexible pouches instead of glass, and steam instead of boiling water.
What is your bone broth made of?
Beef Broth*, Tomato, Organic Onion, Garlic, Organic Parsley, Thyme, Sea Salt, Bay Leaf, Black Pepper. *Broth made with filtered water & from grass-fed beef bones.
Is your packaging BPA-free, recyclable and eco-friendly?
Yes, our bone broth packaging is BPA-free and eco-friendly. While the pouch is technically recyclable, most municipal recycling programs are unable to process the pouch into its separate layers. We are working on providing an in-house recycling program in the near future.
Is bone broth good for gut health?
The natural gelatin found in bone broth is considered a hydrophilic colloid - meaning it attracts liquids such as your stomach acid and enzymes to the food you eat, helping break it down and ease digestion as it makes it way through your gastrointestinal tract.
The amino acid-rich gelatin in bone broth is basically like New-Skin for your wounded intestinal wall. It helps seal the gut and keep toxins out of your blood stream, while also working to rebuild it from the inside out.
What do I do with my bone broth?
Sip it - Heat your bone broth over the stovetop or in the microwave, add a pinch of salt, a dash of your favorite herbs, or a squeeze of lemon juice. There’s no wrong way to sip bone broth!
Cook with it - replace water, stock, or broth in your favorite savory recipes for added flavor and nourishment.
We recommend at least 8 oz a day to unlock the full benefits of bone broth.
Once opened, our bone broth will remain good for 7-10 days in the refrigerator. Store any leftovers in the pouch, or transfer to a refrigerator-safe container.
